Banner Advertising

When it comes to banners there is a plethora of choices from digital banners that you see on most websites, probably this one too, to outdoor display banners.
For the purpose of this article I'm going to discuss the different options of physical advertising banners that are available on the market today.
Masts - A banner mast is generally constructed from steel and they are usually made to order, each mast can have one or two rectangle banners either side of the mast promoting your brand.
Post Mounted - The banners come with brackets and arms and are easily attachable to any existing lamp post, very similar to banner masts but obviously without the mast.
Wall Mounted - Again these are similar to the above two but are installed to walls rather than posts, the way that wall mounted banners have been designed means that they can be used for small or large banners and actually this kind of setup is suitable for banners up to 5 meters square.
Pop-up - These are brilliant for outdoor events like golf days or country shows, you simply unpack them from their carry case and the self-erecting design does the rest, this type of banner system is the only one on the market that can be erected in under 20 seconds, not bad for the impatient ones amongst us!

A Banner History

Banners have been around for hundreds of years, even the word comes from the Latin word bandum - meaning a cloth from which a military standard or flag is made. They've been around so long that most western European countries have evolved the word into their language, for example the Portuguese word for a banner is bandeira.
So who uses them?
If you go back a few hundred years they were used to display a coat of arms and in the Christian church they were and still are used in processions. Back in the 1840's the trade unions started to use banners during the May Day parades and still do to this day.
In the age we live in now they are used by almost all sporting teams and their supporters and nearly every business that does some form of advertising.
If you think the about the last time you walked down a busy high street, you can probably remember seeing them, but there are hundreds of different types of banners, from ones attached to lampposts and walls to ones in shop windows, you'll be surprised if you start looking for them how many there actually are.
These days most external advertising ones are made from PVC so they can last longer without the colours fading in external weather conditions. But they can be made from almost any material, some from no material at all! If you look on most websites they will have advertising web banners on them either at the top, side or bottom of the page, in fact have a look at the page you're on now and you'll see at least one I'm sure.
One advancement in the types available is the new advertising light banners, they work by shining a light on buildings creating adverts, the evolution continues.
So why are outdoor banners so popular?
Well it's quite simple actually, if you think of the cost of other forms of advertising compared with the cost of a large banner, well, it's a lot cheaper, not only that but professional outdoor advertising banners can be used over and over again and last for years, which makes their return on investment extremely good, a no brainer if you will.

Feather Flags And Outdoor Events

Feather flags are one of the best ways to promote your brand at outdoor events or even better a great way to promote a prestigious event and associate your business with it.
You may remember this summer and the months leading up to it that Jessica Ennis was everywhere as she was the pin up girl for the Olympics. One company, I won't say which but I'm sure you'll remember, rolled out a country wide campaign using feather flags to almost all of their forecourts. The flags were branded with Jessica's image and the London 2012 Olympics without the petrol stations logo or name. I remember several times seeing them and thinking that the whole country is behind the GB team and had a heightened sense of patriotism. A stroke of marketing genius I think, associating a brand with a nations pride and all for the cost of a few hundred flags.
Other events like the Great North Run or the Great Manchester Run, use feather flags to directly promote their brand whilst providing information to the runners. Yet again I won't mention their name, but the prominent private health care sponsor places the flags every mile to indicate to the runners where they are in the race and on every flag they have their logo, another example of promoting your brand with an event. Speaking from experience I would also say that as a runner in these events, the mental image of the flags has been burnt into my memory, such was the agony and joy of reaching each milestone!
Now these are obviously large events that are out of the scope for most companies wishing to promote their brand, but the same principles apply to smaller sporting events. If you consider the cost of the flags, the number of people that attend sporting events and the reusability of them, they offer one of the best returns in investment in outdoor marketing. So why don't you use them for school sports days, market festivals and any other outdoor event you can think of.
If you think that they may be hard to put up or that there only suited to certain floor types then you'd be wrong, feather flags usually have either a spiked, concrete or weighted base and a slide on flag that enables them to be erected in seconds, so there really is no excuse.

Anyone Out There Feeling This Too?

I am always, always wary of big universal messages, the new age movement and anything that relies solely on what is going on "out there" in the universe. There is so much waffle out there that I like to keep my spirituality much more grounded and much more focused on how it can support action, success and peace. Rather than it being the be all and end all of my success in life! It feeds me, it doesn't lead me.
That said, I can't ignore what I am feeling right now, intuitively and energetically. Nor can I ignore the message that I am getting for many of my clients right now: Do not push it, it's not the right time.
We seem to be going through a big change within ourselves right now. I cannot explain what might be going on out there in 'outer-space' and don't really want to! But I do know what many people are feeling right now - frustration. It's like we cannot get ahead no matter what we do. We are being forced to stop doing what we have always done - to be loud, forceful and pushy with our messages and ideas. And we are being asked to stop, turn off and let ideas and success grow more organically.
Many of my clients are being guided to take a load off and go back to work part time, to get separation from their big business ideas. And the reason, I feel, is that we are being restructured, internally or energetically. We just don't have the same level of focus that we had 6 months ago, or perhaps the drive forward that we had 12 months ago. And that's OK. This is the cycle of life.
What I do know will happen if we let ourselves be led to quieter way of life for a while, is that our ideas will be rooted more deeply, because we are not pushing at them and unsettling their growth. I know too that our success will be greater, because it will not be loud, but it will be incredibly pervasive. Lastly, I also know that if I don't listen to this calling from the universe, I am going to break down and not want to stand up again. I am tired, and I am frustrated that I've spent a year to get to a place that is not near to where I want to be!
Though, strangely, hope is bigger than it ever has been, and my focus is becoming more and more clear, the more I stand back and stop pushing. I can't help but see the calling that the universe is bringing forward is very clear. Success comes to those who are patient. And to those who take care not to break down and not want to get up again!

Kudos for Lack

We connect in pain, but rarely in joy. This is a problem for us - financially speaking. You see, those who live in lack tend to do so because those around them live in lack. As a humanity we tend to meet each other where we stand because there is connection in that. We get kudos from others for being just like them...
Have you ever heard (or could you imagine hearing) a wealthy entrepreneur bicker about a $4 latte? It seems unlikely. So if you find yourself baulking at the thought of paying for something at the higher end of the market, perhaps its time to rethink how you communicate with your wallet.
I had a dream one night many years ago, at a time when I was struggling to make sense of money and my old habits. In this dream I bought a cup of coffee for what seemed like an extraordinary amount of money. I wanted to tell this cafe owner in no uncertain terms how disgusted I was by his prices.
But the voice of spirit very clearly came out to me. It said: "Do not argue, just pay". And then I got an intensive vision about my future. My own business would thrive because I chose not to argue over such small and meaningless things now - but allowed this cafe owner to run his own business his way, and giving myself the same grace in the moment. I had the money for this coffee, so why should I be so negative about it all?
So, I have a question for you... are you letting meaningless, habitual bitterness get in the way of making money? When I stopped making noise about the 'price of things' I started to make more money. I allowed money in because I saw that it was just money and there was always more coming from somewhere. I did not need to hold onto it, but was free to let it go.
We seem to get kudos from those who agree with us about how ridiculous it is that... [insert complaint here]. But how would it feel to be a person who was so free to spend their own money that the flow never stopped? You wouldn't need those kudos, because you would be flying high in a completely different (potentially happier) realm.
If we are free to spend, then we are willing to receive. It is that simple. Money responds to our perception of it. Is there never enough, or always more for you?

The Power of Focus

What do you do if your car goes into a spin?
Back when my younger sister was doing her police training, she took part in a defensive driving course. She told me that if your car is in a spin, you focus on where you want to end up and your hands will follow. I already knew this, I told her...
A few years before I was coming down a steep mountain road in the rain and I lost control of the car. I came around a curb too fast on this unfamiliar road and suddenly the car was spinning precariously close to the edge of the cliff.
As if fate had intervened, a few weeks before this event someone had told me what to do in such a situation - and today I am doing the same thing for you.
This person had told me - you put your foot on the brakes very slowly and you rest your eyes on a clear space. At the same time I was remembering this, I was already applying the brakes slowly. My body simply followed the memory as it rolled out in my head, as my sister repeated a few years later.
I had 3 friends in the car with me that day. One of these friends was very calmly giving me the same advice that I was already remembering. And the other two sat frozen, gripping their seat, not knowing that this spin could be brought back under control quite easily.
It was a surreal moment but one that provided me with an opportunity to realise something that has always served me. I knew as I applied the brakes slowly that there was no danger. I knew how to take control back over the car - not because I'd done it before, but because someone had guided me. Self-preservation kicked in and I followed that guidance.
And every time my life has seemed to hit an emotional tailspin, or a mental blockage, if not a precarious situation like bankruptcy, I've known what to do... apply the brakes slowly and focus on a clear space to come to a standstill! That is, don't stare at the cliff edge and freak out!
So, why, when it comes to money and business do most of us do the exact opposite of what we should?! We focus hard on what we don't want and we create it.
To me, running a business is no different to that unfamiliar, mountain road. You are going to make mistakes, and you are going to have to regain control when you do. If you don't, you will give up on yourself long before you've discovered the power of focus.
Knowing how to overcome danger is one of life's true gifts. It is simply about removing your focus from what you don't want and the resulting panic, and focusing on the positive outcome you truly desire. This is what all those Law of Attraction teachings are about.
What I want to highlight today is that these teachings are not some outer-space principles that don't work for you. If you are in enough danger and there is enough self-preservation in play, they will work. You WILL focus hard on the outcome you want.
It plays out in our minds - just as that switch to survival happened that day in the car. I simply focused on what I wanted. And it happened.
The problem is that only half of you wants to succeed, the other half is busy thinking about how much love you get from others when you are failing.
It is a part of our evolution, an unfortunate part, that we have been raised to see that gaining love from those around us is often about staying small like them. It's about not wanting, not having and being small...
But let's get real! You will step away from the smallness if you have enough motivation. And more often than not, being a business owner, having a calling to help others, having to fight for abundance are all tools the universe and the soul will use to make sure that you step up to the plate.
The more lack you experience, the more you will eventually kick it up a notch and tell yourself 'that's enough of the smallness, let's just get on with it.' And as you turn towards success, that focus brings the actions and outcomes that you need.
Are you there yet?! Or do you hear yourself saying that you've already spent too much money, or that you've never done the right thing? From that space, you never will. If you feel that you can't have the success you desire, you wont. It really is that simple. We are simplistic in nature. And that's why saying the opposite of failure also works.
True success comes from the power of focus. And right now, as we near the end of 2012 we are being asked to get back to our original goals - to refocus on them with a laser light intensity and to ENSURE that we survive through this focus.
But here's a question - do you even know what your goals are, or are you just doing things in an effort to feel fulfilled or important or loved? There is always a danger, if we are pushing too hard, to fall into a tangled space of unfocussed actions!
Right now, it is to time to step back from your business and ask yourself what you really want. Are you creating that? Or are you just doing things that kind of, maybe, sort of feel OK? There is a big, big difference between a laser light focus on a goal that is important to us, and 'just' being a business owner.
So, are you willing to take another step forward on a loose and tangled pathway that is making you feel ill at ease with yourself? Or is it time to retreat, rest and rethink? I can assure you that resting and rethinking are far from the end of the dreams within you. They are in fact the very beginning of their fulfillment.

How to Improve Your Cash Flow

One of the most difficult things in any practice is how to keep the bills paid while you are waiting for your money to come in. This is especially true of practices that are relying on health insurance or employee assistance program payments. Some will say that you should just take self-pay clients to resolve this issue, but this is difficult to do particularly when you are first starting out. Also, just because clients are "self-pay" doesn't necessarily mean that they are good about paying you! Here are some things that you can do to improve your cash flow.
File your claims daily
The quicker you can get your claims out, the faster you will get paid. If you can't do so on a daily basis, then I would suggest no less than once or twice a week.
File insurance claims electronically
If you are filing paper claims, you can expect to get paid in about 6-8 weeks. This is assuming that there are no errors with the claims. In that case, they are sent back to you (if you are lucky) so that you can fix the problem and resubmit the claim. Sometimes you don't hear anything at all and you have to call to find out the status of the claim(s) only to be told of the error, or worse, that they never received the claim. Now you have to resubmit and wait another 6-8 weeks! Also, keep in mind that when you file in paper you usually get paid in paper (although there are some exceptions to this). This means having to go to the bank to deposit your checks. Compare this with filing claims electronically where you can expect to get paid on average in 10-14 days and the money goes directly into your bank account. Also, when there are errors, you are able to catch them a lot sooner. If you don't have a practice management system that allows to you do so, or if you don't have one at all, I recommend you invest in one (more on this later).
Accept credit/debit cards
Think about how you pay for things these days. How often do you have cash or your checkbook on hand? If you are only accepting cash or check payments then you will hear, "I forgot to bring my checkbook", "I forgot to stop at the ATM" or "Can I pay you next week?" more than you should. You can significantly reduce this by accepting credit or debit cards. This also allows clients to use money from their health savings account (HSA) which are typically accessed by a debit card. Some practice management systems have the ability to integrate with credit card merchants, which means you don't have to manually enter the payments into client ledgers separately if you had a stand-alone credit card machine.
Accept payments on your website
Once you are set up to accept credit/debit cards you can create a link on you website that allows clients to pay online. So next time you hear "I forgot" you can tell your client to make a payment through your website when they get home (no more excuses). Just one more reason to have a website if you don't already.
Accept payments by phone
To do so you need to be able to accept credit cards. Our system also allows us to accept phone payments by using a client's checking or savings account number along with their bank routing number. Clients can also pay by credit card over the phone. Set up a separate voice mail box on your system so client's can leave their payment information. When they call and get your voice mail one of the options now is "If you would like to make a payment by phone, please press 2."
Credit card authorization on file
We created a form that client's can fill out at the onset of treatment where they authorize recurring charges to their credit or debit card at a frequency that they specify (e.g., each visit, monthly, until a certain date, etc.). If you have their authorization on file, then you don't have to worry about a forgotten wallet or purse.
